The Gillings Sustainable Agriculture Project: A Gillings Innovative Laboratory

Aim 5: Policy Analysis

5A: North Carolina Sustainable Local Food Policy Council:

  • We are working with Dr. Sue Havala Hobbs, UNC Health Policy Management, to assess the creation of the new Food Policy Council and coordinating our work with the efforts stimulated by the Farm to Fork Summit (800+ attendees in May, listserv of nearly a thousand) , led by GIL collaborator, Dr. Nancy Creamer, Co-Director, Center for Environmental Farm Systems, and now developing a statewide plan for building a sustainable local food economy.
  • For this policy analysis the majority of stakeholder interviews have been conducted with the assistance of three graduate students from the nutrition department.
  • 5B: NC Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education

    • We are spending this second year working to mentor a masters student on her thesis project which is to conduct a policy analysis of the NC Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education  (SNAP-Ed). By conducting this policy analysis we will be able to look for ways to assist the state to maximize funding opportunities in the future.
